Spiritual direction is an ancient discipline traced back to the early days of the Christian church when holy men and women--upset with the way Christianity was being institutionalized around power--withdrew to the deserts of the Middle East to seek God's wisdom. People followed these desert fathers and mothers into the wilderness, meeting with them in caves and other tiny spaces, asking them for spiritual guidance.

The practice of noticing God's presence in our lives is experiencing a revival today. Spiritual directors rarely work in caves anymore, although many lead "quieter than usual" lives. And while we pursue holiness in all of life, we don't see ourselves as particularly holier than others. Our deep desire is to inspire others to a greater awareness of how God is present in their lives and follow that presence into the world wherever it leads.

Spiritual direction is a kind of guidance that can help you focus on meditation and prayer, increased awareness and the radical power of God's unconditional love.
